Thanks to Trusted House Sitters, we were able to spend a beautiful month in Fethiye Turkey - a charming town we might not have discovered otherwise and here are 5 top things on our list we'd recommend to do if you're in town!
1. Market Magic: Fethiye's Spice Bazaars and Markets
The local markets, is where the essence of a place truly comes alive. During our recent adventure, we uncovered two distinct faces of the market scene – the tourist-centric bazaars and the vibrant local produce markets. Here's the lowdown on what you need to know.
First, let's dive into the world of the "pretty" bazaars. These markets, often found in bustling tourist areas, are a visual feast of colours, scents, and textures. Imagine stacks of aromatic spices meticulously arranged, dried fruits glistening like jewels, and an abundance of teas that can transport you to far-off lands with a single sip. The craftsmanship is evident, with handmade rugs and towels showcasing intricate designs.
Even if you're not in the market for souvenirs, it's worth a visit just to soak in the vibrant atmosphere. However, a word of caution: prices here tend to cater to tourists, so don't be surprised if you find yourself paying a premium and parking can be a nightmare if you're driving. If you're on the hunt for a deal, keep reading.
For a more immersive and budget-friendly experience, head to the local produce markets. Here, the focus shifts from aesthetics to authenticity. You'll find an array of fresh fruits, vegetables, and an impressive assortment of local cheeses and olives. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafts through the air, tempting your taste buds.
One of the highlights of these markets is the bustling food stalls. They whip up fresh juices that burst with flavour and serve the most authentic gozlemes – a local delight that's a must-try. What's even more appealing is that you can also purchase spices here, often at a fraction of the cost you'd find in the tourist-centric bazaars and parking is readily available around the market.
In the end, both types of markets offer their unique charm and experiences. The "pretty" bazaars dazzle with their aesthetics and are perfect for indulging in the vibrant spirit of a destination. However, for those seeking more than just a visual spectacle, the local produce markets provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of a place.
Our advice? Do both. Explore the tourist-centric bazaars to satisfy your senses and capture some stunning photographs. Then, venture to the local markets to taste the authenticity and mingle with the locals. After all, it's in these markets that you'll truly discover the soul of a destination and perhaps take home a few spices and memories at local prices.
2. Ancient Mysteries Unveiled: Fethiye's Lycian Rock Tombs (Ancient City of Telmessos)
When traveling, it's the unexpected gems that often leave the most lasting impressions. We were driving around town when we encountered these ancient tombs, carved into mountains. There was parking just outside the ticket office or to the left, down the slope. The entry fee was 60 Turkish Lira per person, where you can embark on an historic journey that takes just 15 minutes to reach the main tomb and are greeted with views of the city behind you. We travelled here in summer, so it is a good idea to get there at opening time so that you can avoid the sun as it rises behind the mountain.
The stairs at Telmessos are, quite literally, a stairway to adventure. As you begin your ascent, you'll quickly realise that this isn't your ordinary staircase. Carved into the rugged landscape, these stairs wind their way up the hillside, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn.
Traveling with a furry companion? You're in luck! The Ancient City of Telmessos welcome dogs, allowing your four-legged friend to join you on this adventure. The natural terrain and open spaces make it an ideal environment for dogs to roam and explore. Just remember to keep them on a leash and clean up after them to ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.
So, if you find yourself in Fethiye, don't miss the chance to ascend to new heights and discover the captivating views that await at the Ancient City of Telmessos.
3. Sunset Serenity: Watching the Day's End at Fethiye Harbour
In the enchanting town of Fethiye, where the Aegean Sea meets the timeless charm of Turkish culture, there's a nightly ritual that captivates both travellers and locals alike. It's the sunset at Fethiye's harbor, a sight so mesmerising that during our four-week stay, we found ourselves drawn to it at least three times a week.
As the sun begins its descent, the harbour transforms into a magical realm. The warm hues of twilight dance upon the water, casting a tranquil spell over the scene. It's the perfect time for a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, with each step taking you deeper into the heart of this coastal haven.
As the night progresses, the harbour comes alive with activity. What starts as a serene setting evolves into a bustling hub of camaraderie. Locals bring out their rugs and thermos flasks filled with fragrant tea, along with an array of delectable snacks. Families and friends gather to relax, chat, and savour the evening together.
While the ambiance alone is worth the visit, we also dined at a couple of spots along the harbour, each offering a distinct experience. Let's start with a word of caution: we wouldn't recommend the seafood platter at Totsbaa, as our previous review explains in detail. It's essential to know where to find the best culinary delights.
On the flip side, our dining experience at Cunda Balik was nothing short of exceptional. From the delectable seafood dishes to the impeccable service, it was a culinary journey that left a lasting impression. Our full review can be found here.
Don't miss the chance to catch the sunset at this enchanting harbour, if you find yourself in Fethiye.
4. Oludeniz: The Postcard-Perfect Blue Lagoon
Oludeniz, with its iconic Blue Lagoon, was one such serendipitous discovery during our coastal exploration. As we meandered along the picturesque coastline, we were treated to a mesmerising view of paragliders descending from the clear blue skies – a truly breathtaking sight.
But our adventure took an unexpected turn when we reached a dead end, where Sun City Beach Club beckoned us with promises of sun, sea, and relaxation. For a fee of 300 Turkish Lira per person, which included a comfortable sunbed in the regular section, we decided to make this impromptu stop a part of our journey. The beach club also offered a premium section for an additional cost, boasting private areas and upgraded sunbeds. However, as we looked around, the regular section seemed just as inviting, so we opted to stay put.
One of the highlights of Sun City Beach Club was the opportunity to engage in stand-up paddle boarding. For 650 Turkish Lira, you could enjoy an hour of paddling through the serene waters of the Blue Lagoon – a fantastic way to immerse yourself in this natural wonder. For those seeking a unique aquatic adventure, there was an option to rent a small boat equipped with an umbrella for 1200 Turkish Lira. This delightful little vessel could comfortably accommodate about four people and allowed you to paddle (using your feet!) out to the bay. It's a fantastic way to get up close and personal with the tranquil beauty of Oludeniz.
As we lounged on our sunbeds, gazing at the azure waters and the distant paragliders, we couldn't help but feel that we'd stumbled upon a hidden paradise. Oludeniz and its Blue Lagoon had exceeded our expectations, offering not only natural beauty but also the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
5. Exploring Mysterious Ruins: Karakoy Ghost Town
The allure of abandoned places, shrouded in mystery and history, has a way of beckoning adventurous souls. In our quest for the extraordinary, we stumbled upon the enigmatic ruins of Karakoy Ghost Town, that promised to reveal stories lost to time.

Our journey to Karakoy began with a sense of anticipation, as we had heard whispers of its eerie charm and hidden tales. As we ventured deeper into the heart of the town, the remnants of a once-vibrant life began to reveal themselves. Dilapidated stone frames, overgrown courtyards, and the occasional forgotten relic painted a picture of what was once a bustling community.
For avid photographers, Karakoy Ghost Town is a treasure trove of visual inspiration. The play of light and shadows on weathered stone structures, the interplay of nature reclaiming its territory, and the subtle beauty of decay create an atmosphere that's both haunting and mesmerising. Every corner seemed to hold a story waiting to be told through the lens.
Exploring Karakoy is not without its challenges. The uneven terrain and fragile structures require caution, and it's advisable to tread lightly to preserve the delicate balance between nature's reclamation and the town's historical significance. Respect for the site and its history is paramount.
If you're a traveler with a taste for the mysterious and a love for history, consider embarking on your own journey to Karakoy Ghost Town – a place where the whispers of the past linger in every crumbling wall.
